Vestibular Rehabilitation (Vertigo)
Your vestibular system is located within your inner ear and has an important role in your body’s balance system. If something goes wrong within this system then you will experience dizziness, vertigo, nausea or difficulty staying balanced.
Our experienced physiotherapists are trained in the assessment and management of vestibular symptoms such as dizziness and vertigo.
A common cause of vestibular symptoms is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). This condition occurs when crystals in your inner ear dislodge and move into the wrong part of your vestibular canal. This confuses the balance signals sent to your brain which results in a feeling that the room is spinning.
Physiotherapy vestibular treatment involves manoeuvres to reposition the loose crystals back to their correct location. Specific exercises and guidance are provided as treatment, and to ensure that the symptoms do not return.
Cervical vertigo is also known as cervicogenic dizziness, and can cause dizziness and vertigo. This dizziness is often accompanied by neck pain and stiffness. Your neck also plays a role in your balance and coordination. When your neck is injured or is affected by arthritis it can make you feel light headed, unsteady and dizzy.
Our physiotherapists can provide treatment on the neck including joint mobilisations, soft tissue release techniques, acupuncture, and dry needling. These are all effective techniques in the management of this condition. Specific exercises are prescribed targeting the neck and vestibular system to ensure that this does not re-occur.
